Monday, December 31st, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Amit_Patel]Amit Patel If there is one thing that keeps on changing in the most frequent of fashions - a mobile phone model opt to take the position. Manufacturers come out with new models every now and then and before anyone notices there is already an updated version of a particular model. Mobile phones today are one of the hardest thing to keep up the pace with along the way of its advancement both in terms of technology and design. The top players of the game nokia, sony ericsson, samsung or LG are all in the game of technology race and often try to gain advantage by coming up with the most innovative and spectacular new designs that sometimes even defy fantasy. With bluetooth; Mp3; FM Radio; High quality digital image taking abilities, Word Processing- all fabricated within the increasingly tiny phones - its a wonder where the cell phone industry is going to land in the future. The present developments are emphasizing on projects which will enable people to watch TV on their mobile devices by the end of 2010. The introduction of 3G networks to pursue a better performing digital downloads or streaming media is already well represented in the latest mobile phones in the market today. As a race towards eradicating the use of conventional keypads by replacing them with touch screens and thus diminishing the size of the cell phone to a further extend many companies are already facing remarkable success . Many companies are even trying to implement the biometric identity solutions within these portable communication devices in order to enhance security. Many advanced version of the mobile phones are however called pocket PCs. These technological wonders features almost all the basic functionality of a modern day computer merged along with telecommunication features making it the perfect ground to be called the cell phones of tomorrow. Pink Roses: Traditional Symbol of Mother’s Love

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Gail Leino Though roses are traditionally symbolic of love and affection, and are the most popular Valentines Day Flower, the meaning of pink roses has significance depending on where you look. In ancient Roman Mythology, the God, Apollo, turned Rhoanthe into a pink rose, when she unfairly sought to become the protector of women. In this scheme of events, pink roses depict pain, long-standing suffering and death. Thankfully, there are not many people who adhere to the tenants of ancient mythology. In modern times, the pink rose is considered to be a symbol of innocent love that has not yet blossomed into passion, a flower of sweet thoughts and gentle emotions. Pink roses please all our senses. Visually, they come in a wide array of colors, sizes, and fragrances. They are beautiful to look at, beautiful to smell, and carry a wealth of deep meaning in their blooms. The next time you need to express joy, affection, pride, gratitude, a new romance, or even good luck, pink roses are the perfect choice. This elegant flower; in its beauty and delicate shade expresses a simple, innocent joy. As opposed to red roses, which speak of deep passion, the pink roses are a gentle reminder of affections not yet awakened the gentle beginning of a wonderful relationship. Perhaps the most touching, and traditional meaning for pink roses, depicts and embraces a Mothers love for her child. It is said that when Mother Mary first saw her son, Jesus, carrying the cross on which he was to be hanged, the first tear that she shed, fell on barren ground. From that single tear, grew the very first, perfect pink rose. There could be nothing more precious to a mother than to be given pink roses, and to recall the story of Mary, Mother of Jesus. Whether you are having an English tea party, giving a gift for Mothers Day, or simply saying, thank you, pink roses are the perfect choice. Marketing Person You Think You Aren’t

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Beth Woodward Have you thought about starting your own business? Have you started one and are having challenges with marketing, fear of failure, fear of successI could go on and on. Has the question, Now what? ever entered your mind? If so, I would like to share my story with you. A journey, from corporate to business owner and everything in between. After working in the corporate field for 25 years, an opportunity presented itself to start my own business, to work out of my home. I found a fulfilling profession in personal and business coaching. I love working with others helping them to achieve a better life for themselves. Although it was my choice to develop my own business, I did not have the marketing experience and desire I needed to build that client base. The truth is, I disliked (kind word) marketing, I didn’t want to sell and I knew I didn’t have what it takes to achieve this part of my businessor thought I didn’t have what it takes. The fact is, if I had a dollar for every time I said, “I’m not a marketing person,” I wouldn’t have to market my business; I’d be set for life. I did the typical routine of sending some letters of introduction to my friends and business acquaintances, giving away sample coaching sessions and making a few calls that felt safe. I even put a few ads in the paper. I soon came to the reality that the phone was not going to ring and people were not going to approach me while I was sitting comfortably at my desk. Then a turning point came while I was standing in my office one afternoon. I realized I just wasn’t a person that could be an independent business owner - what was I thinking that I could do this? I decided I should quit and go back to an office job. At that moment I heard a voice; it was very clear. “If you quit before you’ve given it 100% you will be very disappointed in yourself for the rest of your life.” I thought I’d give it one more try. How was I going to do this? I asked myself two basic questions. What did I need and what did I want? The answers I received were simple. I needed movement and I wanted color. At that point that was all I knew. I decided to trust that these answers would forward my direction in marketing and building my business. About one week later I drove past a juggling academy in Burnsville MN. Color, movement - I signed up. I started with a juggling class, networked with friends and business peers and developed a monthly call with other business owners about “manifesting” what you desire. I started looking at me; what made me tick, what energized me and when was I at my best. This became a time period of self-discovery. I had been so tied up in who I thought I wasn’t, I had forgotten who I was; a great team player, a great partner, the queen of brainstorming and resource extraordinaire. I thrived from the energy of others to help build my business. I needed diversity to keep things interesting and took a look at what really interested me. What were my strengths and what made me unique? I also looked at what was giving me energy and what was taking my energy. I decided to cut loose a part of my business that was draining rather than energizing. About 2 weeks later “Marketing On The Playground” was born. I had created the space for what was supposed to come in by releasing what wasn’t working. About 1- years have passed since I allowed myself this self-discovery time and gave myself permission to market my business “my way”. My business has blossomed into: 1) writing a booklet, “Marketing On The Playground” 2) developing playshops and teleclasses to help others struggling with marketing their business 3) creating retreats for entrepreneurs that need time to get away and develop their ideas. Here’s the bottom line. Discover what works for you. It should be an extension of your own strengths, passions and uniqueness. You have chosen to be in your own business; that took guts, passion and a desire for making a better life for yourself. Tell me again why you don’t think you have what it takes to market your business? If you have passions, interests, the strength, and I do mean strength to step into this world and set your own course, you have what it takes to market your business. Now, it’s just a matter of finding what works for you. What was my secret for overcoming obstacles? “True” belief. Belief so strong that you are willing to stand up and overcome anything and everything that challenges your vision. A Few Marketing Tips: Give yourself “permission” to follow your own style as an extension of yourself. Network and Market Through Your Strengths, Your Passions and Your Uniqueness. Trust Yourself - You are the only one who has Your own unique talent to market Your business. Look at what’s working and what’s not - If it’s not working do you need to cut it loose? Does An Alkaline Diet Help You Lose Weight? A Review Of The Evidence

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By James Khan Probably the first scientific studies on digestion were done by Ivan Pavlov who became famous for his ’salivating dogs’. Pavlov showed that the digestive enzymes released and the amount of acid secreted depends on the type of food. His experiments with rats showed that starches are digested in about two hours, proteins are digested in about four hours but a protein-starch mixture could still be digesting 13 hours later. With dogs, again the protein-starch mixture took over twice as long compared to the same food consumed separately. Pavlov also showed that food taken on top (i.e. before digestion has completed) can lead to fermentation. This happens when you eat fruit after a meal; many people say that it gives them gas. What could account for Pavlovs results? The enzymes essential for digestion only function at specific pH levels; proteins and carbohydrate enzymes require opposite pH levels. If you mix them together in the same bag, you wont be able to digest either food properly. “Most fruits go straight through the stomach into the duodenum for digestion, which means if you put fresh fruit on top of a big meal, it has to sit and wait in the top of the stomach until the other food is digested, during which delay bacteria attack the fruit and ferment it, gobbling up all the nutrients and leaving you with gas and metabolic wastes.” Daneil Reid, Trophology: The Science of Food Combining, “The Tao of Health”. In 1908 Dr Howard Hay after practicing medicine for 16 years developed High Blood Pressure, Brights Disease and a dilated heart. As there was no treatment available, Dr Hay decided to find a cure for his own symptoms. He looked at his food intake and the chemical process of digestion, the enzymes that are essential for this process and whether the food has an overall acidifying or alkalizing effect on the body. To the amazement of his colleagues, he had a complete remission of his symptoms in 3 months of changing his diet. He also reduced his weight by 20kg’s. In 1911 he introduced his Food Combining guidelines and gave lectures till his death about the need to combine foods properly and reducing acidifying foods from the diet. If you think there’s nothing to acid-alkaline food combining, try this: one day for lunch eat a steak with chips, and monitor how you feel after an hour or so. Next day eat the same steak, but with a large vegetable salad. Which day did you feel more tired, drowsy? Try feeding your dog meat and biscuits for a while, see how he feels! Try an acidifying McDonald’s diet for a month. If youre still alive, try an alkaline diet of alkaline water, fruits, vegetables, juices and super greens for a month. Youre guaranteed to lose weight from this diet its over 95% water! Some doctors maintain that all food is acid in the stomach and becomes alkaline in the intestines from the pancreas secretions. The blood pH range is so narrow that any measurable change would cause death. Even a bottle of ant-acids wont affect the acidity of the stomach for long. These scientific facts dont mean that an alkaline diet is useless or that the body can magically process food in any old combination! Remember Pavlovs results? Why are so many people that eat at McDonald’s fat and why did Spurlock nearly die? The fat content is not that high - a Big Mac apparently is 100% grilled beef, the chips are fried in vegetable oil and there’s no fat in the cola! Could it be the acid, the high glycemic load and the bad combinations? Such foods play havoc on our blood sugar and pH levels. As Daniel Reid explains the sugary ’soft drink’ is an ‘acid bomb’:”A 350 ml serving of Coke, Pepsi or similar drink delivers a sugar fix equivalent to about 9 teaspoons of sugar straight into the blood stream. This instantly acidifies the bloodstream to the extreme point that without an immediate emergency response from the body, it would kill you in a mater of minutesyou’d have to drink 32 glasses of alkaline water to neutralize the blood pHto prevent death by acidosis, the body reacts swiftly by drawing huge amounts of organic calcium from the bones and teeth and pouring it into the bloodstream to neutralize the excess acid and quickly restore alkaline balance. Calcium is the bodys most potent alkalizing agent” Are there any clinical studies to settle this issue? A study called “Cola beverage consumption induces bone mineralization reduction in ovariectomized rats” (the rats were fed cola - acid, pH 2.5 - and the effects on bone density measured) suggests that “heavy intake of cola soft drinks has the potential of reducing femoral mineral density”. Dr L. Frassettos team at the University of California discovered that as we age, starting around age 45, we lose the alkaline buffer bicarbonates in our blood: “Our group has shown that contemporary net acid-producing diets do indeed characteristically produce a low-grade systemic metabolic acidosis in otherwise healthy adult subjects, and that the degree of acidosis increases with age, in relation to the normally occurring age-related decline in renal functional capacity.” The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that alkalizing diets improve bone density and serum growth hormone concentrations; the acidosis resulting from acidic diets contributes to bone and muscle loss. Sang Whang in his book Reverse Aging proposed a Theory of Aging: we age because we gradually accumulate organic acid wastes. These wastes show up as uric acid, urate, sulfate, phosphate, kidney stones and other organic wastes often surrounded by cholesterol. Cellulite is a gel-like substance made up of fat in which are trapped acid wastes in pockets below the skin. Dr Robert Young, author of The pH Miracle has been saying this for years Obesity is an acid problem, the fat is saving our lives. Should I eat alkaline foods and stop eating acidifying things like red meats? Yes eat plenty of water-rich alkaline foods; but theres no need to avoid any food that contains good nutrients in it like my favorites lamb kebabs and sashimi. As Patrick Holford, author of The Optimum Nutrition Bible says moderation in everything, including moderation”! Acid-alkaline diet food charts come from the pH of the ash that results from burning food; its caused by the unburned minerals. However, just as burning petrol creates exhausts, over 97% of any food metabolized creates acid wastes. At less than 1%, alkaline minerals are a fraction of the nutritional content of food and the overall acidity produced. Clinical studies show that alkaline mineral water is the best way to obtain alkaline minerals and acid waters like colas are the best way to quickly deplete them! The most nourishing alkaline foods are natures super greens spirulina, barley and wheat grass powders. Mix half a tea spoon in alkaline water daily. This will give you more nutrients then a basket full of vegetables. Other super foods are EFA oils and bee pollen. So eat a nutritionally balanced diet of natural whole foods and combine them sensibly. Most of all drink lots of alkaline mineral water. Your weight will take care of itself. The Amazing Hummingbird

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By George Steiner Without a doubt, hummingbirds are beautiful and interesting creatures. Those living in the wild usually have a lifespan of 3 to 5 years. However, in captivity, hummingbirds can survive for more than 10 years! They feed off of insects, taking down an average of 400 to 500 per day, even more when it rains. They also eat more when they are about to migrate, sometime even doubling their weight for the long flight ahead. Hummingbirds also feed on flower nectar, helping the flower out at the same time by pollinating it. For this reason, the Portuguese gave the hummingbird its name meaning flower kisser. There are even North American plants that depend on hummingbirds for pollination. They can hover above the flower or feeders thanks to their unique wings; in order for them to make forward and backward strokes consecutively their wings rotate at their shoulders. Some hummingbirds wings flap as slow as 18 times per second, and some can beat them at an astonishing 70 to 80 flaps per second. They breathe an average of 250 times per minute. These small birds have speed, flying at speeds over 45 mph, and with bodies ranging from 2 to 8 , they are also quite agile. There are over 338 species of hummingbirds, but only about 16 are common in the United States. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the only species common east of the Mississippi. Males of these species have a ruby colored throat, while the females have a pale, often speckled throat. It is common with most species of hummingbirds for the male to be colorful and flashy. They arrive at nesting grounds early to claim a territory and then flash their neon colors to attract females. Males have more than one mate, and females can tend to several nests at one time. She may be building one nest while still caring for newly hatched babies. The main responsibility of a female is to take care of the nest. She lays two very small white eggs at a time; when the hatchlings start to outgrow the nest, it will actually stretch with them because of the elasticity of the spider webs it is made of. The nestling will stay in the nest for about 21 days before going out to forage their own food. After that, its on its own! Enjoy! George & Judy www.hum-ming-bird.com. George and wife Judy are empty nesters (ah ha no wonder the affinity for birds!)who enjoy the outdoors, stained glass and eagerly awaiting for the truckloads of laundry that their two college daughters bring home. Of recent, the internet has played an integral part in George’s lengthening “To Do” list and Judy’s search for a internet rehabilitation center. High Carbs/Low Fat Diets and Cardio Vascular Disease

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Dr. N. Rowan Richards For the past 20 years, the American public has been bombarded with the message: “Fat is bad!” As a result, our food supply is now inundated with “low fat” foods, engineered foods and foods processed to remove natural fats. In every instance, low fat foods are loaded with carbohydrates. The result: Americans are suffering from a variety of endocrine problems and degenerative diseases directly attributable to insulin resistance, excessive intake of refined carbohydrates and a lack of proper fat in the diet. Actually, this information is not new. It has simply been ignored by the American food industry. In 1956 Thomas L. Cleave, Surgeon-Captain of the Royal Navy and research director of the British Institute of Naval Medicine, published a paper proposing that many chronic conditions were the result of a “master disease” resulting from the rise in popularity of sugary foods. He pointed out that it requires approximately 20 years “incubation” time for the chronic diseases to manifest themselves. Interestingly, the sudden rise in popularity of sugary foods just before the turn of the century coincided with the emergence of heart disease and disorders of the digestive tract as major killers after World War I. He cited other examples as well: 1. When Iceland’s diet became Westernized in the 1930s and sugar and refined carbohydrate consumption rose significantly, diabetes became commonplace in the 1950s. 2. In studies of Africans, he found that wherever rapid dietary change introduced refined carbohydrates, heart disease and diabetes began to spread approximately two decades later. 3. Finally, he pointed out that studies ranging from Kurds to Yemenites to Zulus found that the refining and processing of foods appeared to bring a rise in chronic disease in less than a quarter century. (The Kellogg Report, The Impact of Nutrition, Environment and Lifestyle on the Health of Americans, Joseph D. Beasley, MD., and Jerry J. Swift, M.A., 1989, p 331) Closer to home, we have the example of the Eskimos. Subsisting on a diet of almost pure protein and fat, heart disease, obesity, diabetes and dental caries were unknown. With the Westernization of their diet, all of these health problems became scourges in the Eskimo culture. Another interesting and well-documented phenomenon is the increase in heart disease with the introduction of:”refined” white flour and the dramatic drop in deaths from heart disease as the American public began to buy and consume vitamins. Conflict In Faith

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Wayne Mitchell Direct Answers - Column for the week of July 19, 2004 My husband is Jewish, and I am Catholic. That wasn’t a problem when we were dating, because he isn’t religious. He married a Catholic before, and their daughter was raised Catholic. A reformed rabbi married us. I sacrificed being married in church by a priest, but we shared our traditions. My husband broke the glass, and we lit our candles. My family wasn’t too happy I married outside my faith, but they accept him. When our daughter was born, I didn’t want my children growing up with no direction, so I decided to raise her Catholic. My husband wasn’t too happy, but he agreed. His family was invited to the christening, but they refused to have any part of it. I bit my tongue and let it go, but I resented them for not being there. Four years later we have a son, and it’s his turn to be baptized. This time they come to the party, not the church, and they don’t bring a gift. So that’s another slap in the face. Two months ago our daughter had her first communion. I asked if they wanted to be part of their granddaughter’s day, and they said no. So to me that’s another slap in the face. Through the years we celebrated my husband’s holidays with his family, and my family went to their bar mitzvahs. My husband agrees with his family that it’s okay for them not to be involved, but I know for a fact his family has gone to christenings, communions, and confirmations for their neighbors. Well, after 10 years, I no longer want to be involved in their holidays and family functions. In three year’s time, when it’s my son’s turn, I know they’ll do the same thing. My husband is in the middle, which I know is hard for him, but I can’t bite my tongue anymore. I want to know how to stop hating my husband’s family. Alyssa Alyssa, what if you kept inviting vegetarians to an all-you-can-eat steak tartare dinner? (That’s seasoned raw beef.) Would you really expect them to attend? You knew when you married there was a divide. Your in-laws are of a different faith, and different faiths oppose and contradict one another. If you don’t have a problem going to their religious events, then go. But don’t expect or invite them to yours. They find them indigestible. When you were married by a rabbi, you suggested things might work out otherwise. All your in-laws are doing by not coming or giving a gift is affirming “this is not what we want.” When Wayne was in the navy, the rule in the wardroom was no one was allowed to discuss sex, politics, or religion. Perhaps you and your in-laws can put religion in the category of topics which are off-limits. How much healing might be possible between you in just leaving religion out of your relationship? Tamara Something To Hide My name is Joy, and I’m 20 years old. In March I met a guy online. He is from Canada. He seems to be a sweet guy and I like him a lot, but some things don’t add up. I’m curious he didn’t give me his number because he said he did it before and it caused him a lot of pain. He doesn’t have a web camera because he lives at home with his mom, and he said she doesn’t want a webcam in her house. Yesterday I e-mailed him and told him it’s over because I’m afraid of getting hurt and him turning out to be a serial killer or something. Joy Joy, he’s probably not a serial killer, but a web camera might catch a glimpse of something he doesn’t want you to see, like a wife and children. You did the right thing by ending it. When something feels amiss, trust your feelings. Wayne About The Author Authors and columnists Wayne and Tamara Mitchell can be reached at www.WayneAndTamara.com. Florida Fishing For Pompano

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Bob Alexander Every fisherman who has ever thrown his bait into the Gulf of Mexico likes to fish for Pompano. They’re the best tasting fish in the gulf, bar none. They’re also fairly easy to catch from June until the middle of December. Winter and spring months are only fair because they are scattered and generally smaller than the one’s caught in the summer and fall. The Pompano were running up and down the Gulf of Mexico this fine Fourth of July weekend. This is a fish that truly loves warmer water, with their preferred water temperature being between 82 and 98 degrees Fahrenheit. Walking along the beach just after first light with the smell of the ocean and the spray from the surf leaving the taste of salt on your lips is an absolutely wonderful way to start the day. The sun, just peeking through the mist, will soon burn away any lingering wisps of fog remaining on the beach. Seabirds fighting over remnants of a mysterious sea object that has washed ashore, reminds me to protect the shrimp I had stored in a bucket next to my beach chair. A solitary pelican has just crept within 15 yards of me and is staring at the bait bucket as though he can see inside. He must have heard the shrimp moving around. This beautiful morning I was fishing off the beautiful sugar white sand of Mexico Beach, just east of Port St. Jo and just down the road from Panama City, Florida. One of the few areas that is not overly populated, either by local fishermen or by tourists, it was a surprise to find myself relatively alone. Looking up and down the beach you could only see an occasional beach walker searching the sand to see what secrets the sea had washed ashore on the early morning tide. Pompano are not fish eaters so the first thing you have to do when fishing is to secure your bait. Besides the shrimp I had already bought, I had to have sand fleas. They’re on any Pompano’s menu and they’re usually plentiful along most beaches. The easiest and cheapest way to obtain these them is to catch them yourself! They’re found at the waters edge as it recedes back into the sea. As the water rushes back from the beach, you’ll see small holes appear at the water’s edge. Those holes are where a sand flea is burrowing. Immediately dig down and you’ll find them. For my sand flea hunting I simply use a sturdy bucket that I’ve drilled many holes in the bottom and sides. This allows the water to flush out of its container and leave the sand fleas on the bottom when I dig for them. There are several types of sand flea rakes you could buy, but making your own is more fun. I’ve even seen kids on the beach digging for them with a stiff toy beach bucket. Just use whatever is handy. After you catch a dozen or more, put them into your bait bucket with a little sand and water and you’re ready to start fishing. You can always catch more fleas when you run out of the ones you’ve already caught. Pompano run in schools. Where you find one, you will usually find many, so remember that when you’re catching sand fleas. Pompano also eat shrimp with live ones being the better bait but dead ones will work if your bait shrimp is not alive. I use a weight 5′ rod and a light reel with 8 to 10 lb test line. I use this because I know that most pompano are between 1 pound and 3 pounds. I also keep a 7′ surf rod and surf reel with 15 lb test line in the other line holder just in case I hang a bigger fish. The rig that has worked well for me starts with a barrel swivel on the end of my line. I’ll then tie a 3′ to 4′ foot of 30 lb leader to the swivel. After that comes the two 8″ lengths of leader on which I will tie 1/0 circle hooks. I’ll tie those about 12″ apart. After that, all that remains is tying a 2 ounce egg sinker to the bottom of the leader. Then all I have to so is bait my hooks and throw the rig as far out on the gulf as I can. That’s usually about 30 to 40 yards. There are other more sophisticated and expensive ways to catch both pompano and sand fleas, but I choose to keep it simple and as cheap as I can. Vacations are costly enough without spending a lot of money on bait and the fish you will catch with them. Most of us, if we add up the cost of a fishing trip and divide that into the amount of fish we catch, would be much better off going to a good restaurant. I figure that counting the gas for the trip to the beach, lodging, food, bait and a few souvenirs, each fish I caught that day cost me approximately $438.00 each.
